About Individual Counseling
Individual Counseling is a time when I can meet with a student one on one to help with social skills or to give them time to talk about issues that concerns them. These sessions require parental permission via a letter or phone call.

Control vs. Cannot Control
During individual counseling we will talk about things such as, what you can control and what you cannot control. These discussions could be based on a need in the classroom or at home. The goal is to put into perspective what is in the student's control so there is no unnecessary blaming of self or others.

FAMILY CHANGES
Many changes can happen in a family throughout the child's life: divorce, death, step-families, new baby, etc. There are many situations that can be hard on the children as well. I am able to work through the student's issues by working with them in various ways- letter writing, working through the changes and learning how to express their emotions are a few ways that I can help.

Journaling
Often times I ask a student I am working with to journal. I give the student a journal for them to keep and we discuss anything that he/she should writes inside or would like to discuss. Sometimes the student wishes to write in the journal and have me read it so they don't have to talk about whatever is bothering them out loud. This is a good resource to use throughout counseling because it is a great way to reflect on the student progress.

This is a great visual to help set goals with your students. In each counseling session, you are always working for an end goal. For example getting better grades, building positive relationships, getting involved in extracurricular activities, dealing with divorce, etc. This visual helps each student take responsibility for where they want to go.
